Shirley C. (O’Brien) Herlihy, 85, died Thursday evening, June 20, 2013 in Beverly Hospital. She was the loving wife of the late John H. Herlihy, with whom she shared 55 years of marriage. Born in Salem on Jan. 7, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Gardner and Dora (Wry) O’Brien. She was raised and educated in Salem and was a graduate of Salem High School, Class of 1945 and the Salem Commercial School. For twenty years, Shirley was employed in the business office at the former Hunt Memorial Hospital, retiring as a supervisor. A Danvers resident for more than sixty years, she enjoyed dancing and was active in area senior centers. She was an avid walker and loved the ocean. She is survived by her children, Ellen Herlihy and her husband Steven Ober of Oakham and Stephen Herlihy and his wife Janet of Danvers, her grandchildren, Ariana O’Neill, Damien and Jedediah Ober, Jenelle Paladino, and Shawn and Joseph Herlihy, seven great-grandchildren, her dear friend Arthur Herlihy, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her siblings Vera Bruce, Lawrence O’Brien, and Mildred Surrels. Her Funeral Service will be Wednesday, June 26 at 10AM in C.R. Lyons & Sons, Funeral Directors, 28 Elm St., Danvers Square. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem. Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting hours are Tuesday from 4-8PM in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of the North Shore, 75 Sylvan St., Danvers, MA 01923.
