Shirley E. Richard

Shirley E. (Poor) Richard, 86, died Sunday, August 31, 2014 in the Kaplan Family Hospice House. She was the wife of the late Arthur G. Richard, with whom she shared 52 wonderful years of marriage.
Born in Salem on May 2, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Justin and Irene (Boisvert) Poor. She was raised and educated mostly in Danvers and was a graduate of Beverly High School. She had been a longtime Danvers resident.
Prior to her marriage, Shirley was employed at General Electric. She was also employed at Fairview Machine in Topsfield for several years.
She was a loving and beloved wife, mother, and grandmother. She was an avid square dancer and was a longtime member of the Riverside Squares. She enjoyed playing mahjong at the Danvers Senior Center and weekly dinners with her friends. She also loved reading, doing jigsaw puzzles, and knitting.
Last year she was proud to be the recipient of a medal from the Joslin Clinic for living with diabetes for 75 years.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Tom Nolan of Windham, NH, two grandchildren, Alyssa and Andrew Nolan, her sisters Carole Hutchins and Cynthia Jones, her brother Nathan Poor, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers Raymond, Justin, and Richard Poor.
Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, Sept. 8, 2014 at 9AM in Saint Mary of the Annunciation Church, 24 Conant St., Danvers. Burial will follow in Central Cemetery, Beverly. Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting hours are Sunday from 2-5PM in C.R. Lyons & Sons, funeral Directors, 28 Elm St., Danvers Square. In lieu of flowers, donations in Shirley’s memory may be made to the Joslin Clinic, One Joslin Place, Boston, MA 02215 or the Alzheimer’s Association, 480 Pleasant St., Watertown, MA 02472.
Connie – my deepest sympathies to you and your family on your mother’s passing. I have great memories of your mom from when we were kids – teaching me how to knit, and her famous chili. She will be missed. Sincerely, Marianne (Morano) McManus
